Repairing Damaged Pallet Racking

Damage to pallet racking is commonly caused by forklift impacts, loading operations and general warehouse activity.

Typical problems we encounter include:

  • Bent or damaged uprights

  • Damaged beams

  • Missing or damaged beam safety locks

  • Damaged bracing

  • Loose or missing floor fixings

  • Damaged baseplates

  • Damaged rack protection

  • Dislodged components

  • Impact damage to frames

  • Racking requiring alterations or extensions

Even apparently minor damage should be properly assessed rather than simply straightened, welded or modified without checking the manufacturer's requirements.

SEMA's current guidance emphasises that racking repairs should be carried out by trained installers who understand the storage system and use appropriate repair methods and components.

SEMA Racking Damage Classification

Racking damage is commonly categorised using a traffic-light system to help determine the appropriate response.

🔴 Red Risk

Serious damage requiring immediate action. The affected racking should be unloaded and taken out of use until appropriate remedial work has been completed.

🟠 Amber Risk

Damage requiring remedial action within the specified timeframe. SEMA's current guidance states that Amber damage should be repaired within four weeks, otherwise it becomes Red risk.

🟢 Green Risk

Damage within the applicable SEMA limits but which should still be recorded and monitored during future inspections.

Our team can help you understand the repair requirements identified during an inspection and provide a quotation for the necessary remedial work.

Racking Repairs & Replacement Components

Where components require replacement, the correct parts are important to maintaining the integrity of the storage system.

We assess the existing racking configuration and identify the appropriate replacement components before carrying out the work.

This can include:

  • Uprights and frames

  • Beams

  • Bracing

  • Baseplates

  • Beam locks

  • Floor fixings

  • Rack protection

  • Other compatible racking components

SEMA advises that repair work should follow the original manufacturer's requirements and that inappropriate components or unauthorised repair methods can compromise the racking system.

Planned Racking Maintenance

Regular maintenance can help identify developing problems before they become more serious.

Our planned maintenance services can include:

  • Checking visible damage

  • Replacing damaged components

  • Checking floor fixings

  • Checking rack protection

  • Identifying damaged or missing components

  • Carrying out agreed remedial work

  • Supporting ongoing maintenance requirements

Planned maintenance can help reduce unexpected downtime and keep your warehouse storage equipment in better condition.

For formal racking inspections, we recommend using a suitably qualified SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI).
